Lake Shasta, also called Shasta Lake, is an artificial lake created by the construction of Shasta Dam across the Sacramento River in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest of Shasta County, California. With a capacity of 4,552,000 acre·ft (5,615 Gl) at full pool, the lake has an elevation of 1,067 feet (325 m), and a surface area of 30,000 acres (12,000 ha), making it the state's largest reservoir, and its third largest body of water after Lake Tahoe and the Salton Sea.
White or blue Wiggle Hoochies behind Sling Blades did the trick for rainbows but they were much deeper, smaller and harder to find. Numbers of small bass were taken from the shoreline out to 30 feet but several larger ones were also caught by trout trollers.
Work the shallows in the upper arms for bass in the mornings. You’ll find a few big ones but not much action. Now is the time to start tossing those big swimbaits. When the action shuts down switch to spinnerbaits. Then move to the main lake points in the afternoons and toss 6- and 7-inch trout patterned swimbaits for a few big bass but only one or two. For numbers, move out to 40 feet and use Senkos or tubes. Trout are on top but many have been trolling for them.
Trout fishing has been good, just find the bait and you’ll find fish. The fish have been in 40 feet at the dam, and in the arms at 20 feet. Senkos and MF in blue ‘crawler or spring craw worked well for numbers of bass, while swimbaits produced a few big fish
Target the trout that are in the top 20 feet, the Pitt River normally holds the larger rainbows. The Sacramento arm and out in front of the dam would be the best places for kings, try 50 feet or metering for shad.
Target the browns at the north end of the McCloud, where trout up to 6 pounds are being caught in the top 25 feet using Rapalas and Apexs. The bass action has been slow and tough, with fish down to 40 feet and cold, wet weather returning.
The lake has turned over. Trolling points from the surface to 15 feet has been productive. The trout size is averaging 2 pounds. Go with shad pattern lures, especially from the Bridge Bay to the dam.
